Bremerhaven: Can the leaning lighthouse still be saved?

Bremerhaven: Can the leaning lighthouse still be saved?

The north mole collapsed on Thursday night. Since then, the Bremerhaven lighthouse has been in danger of falling over. Now there is a contingency plan.

Robert Howe, Managing Director of the port operator Bremenports, and Bremen's Ports Senator Claudia Schilling (SPD) presented this concept at a press conference in the afternoon. According to this, experts could start dismantling at the weekend – should the landmark continue to defy the tides. Then the renovation of the mole could begin and the tower could be rebuilt from 2025. But those responsible are worried about the low water. Whenever there is low tide, the tower has less back pressure from the water. The lighthouse survived the first low tide on Thursday afternoon without tilting further. Should the tower fall, all the necessary safeguards have been in place, according to Howe.

Port operator: picket piles most likely gave approach
The subsidence of the mole wasn't predicted, Howe said. "Nevertheless, we've got known for variety of years that the soundness of the pier and, of course, the soundness of the tower is in danger." The pier and pier head on that the tower stands ar designed on picket posts. Investigations showed that these had been lost beneath the pier. that's why the pier was closed to guests. However, since the pier head was once to boot secured with stilt, the picket piles couldn't be examined there, Howe explained. At low water, the piles would have apparently unsuccessful there.

Mayor sees responsibility within the Senate and Bremenports
Bremerhaven's Lord civil authority Melf Grantz (SPD), however, sharply criticized. "If you wished to be misanthropic, you'll say: That was a disaster with associate announcement. For years I actually have desperately noted to those accountable within the Senate and at Bremenports the requirement to renovate the north mole, however sadly nothing visible happened," same the government building boss in an exceedingly statement on Thursday. "What is going on currently harms town of Bremerhaven."

Ships and ferries ar running once more
On Thursday evening, the shipping traffic that had been closed since the morning at the doorway to the Geeste stream and therefore the fishing port for industrial shipping and therefore the Weser ferry from Bremerhaven to Nordenham (Blexen) was free once more. The Geeste flows into the Weser at the tip of the pier. Ferry traffic on the Weser wasn't restricted. in line with town, the beacon light, that began operational in 1914, has been a listed building since 2001. The north mole is owned by the State of Bremen, the tower with its active beacon belongs to the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration.
